Thanks to generous support from the NIU School of Music, the University Libraries now offer unlimited simultaneous access to NAXOS Music Library. All members of the University community may listen to the NAXOS Music Library digital offerings (over 1,248,000 tracks -- over 85,000 CDs) at any time on campus or off campus by authenticating with a campus network ID (z-number or employee Novell ID) and password.
Additionally, library users can access NAXOS Music Library via iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android apps. Follow these steps to gain access to the entire NAXOS Music Library Collection via the app:
1. download the app to your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android device.
2. Once you have downloaded and installed the app, you will need to create a student/member account (this is true for all NIU affiliated users, whether you are student, staff, or faculty) in NAXOS Music Library from a computer connected to NAXOS Music Library via the NIU Libraries subscription. To create your account, go to the NAXOS Music Library homepage, and click on "Playlists" (see below).
On the next screen, click on "Sign Up."
On the following screen, fill in the form.
Once you have created your student/member account, you will use the email address and password you entered during the sign up process to log in to the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Android app. Additionally, once you have created this account, you can create personal playlists in NAXOS Music Library. Faculty who wish to create playlists for their classes will need to use the faculty account in NAXOS Music Library to create these; please contact Michael Duffy, music librarian, at mduffyiv_at_niu_dot_edu or 753-9839, for an orientation or assistance.

Naxos Music Library
The Music Library subscribes to Naxos Music Library, which is a wonderful resource for listening to a wide variety of sound recordings. At this time, we can only provide access to allow five people to log onto it at a time. We encourage you to use this resource, and to let Michael Duffy know (send e-mail to mduffyiv AT niu DOT edu) if you cannot get on because the maximum number of simultaneous users has been reached.
Additionally, if you have finished using Naxos Music Library, please click the RED "Log Out" button along the top of the screen to allow other users to access the content. Thank you very much!

New way to access Naxos Music Library

The University Libraries loaded bibliographic records for thousands of musical sound recordings available through Naxos Music Library. This means that if you search the NIU library catalog for sound recordings, recordings from Naxos Music Library might appear in your list of results.
To illustrate, I searched our catalog for Georges Enesco's Romanian Rhapsody no. 1 (in our new catalog system, I used an advanced search and entered "enesco" as "author name" in the first search box, and "romanian rhapsody 1," selected all of these, and searched as "keyword anywhere" in the second search box) and I saw the list of results shown in the first picture on this blog post. When I clicked on the circled result, Rhapsody, I saw the page in the second picture. Note the links in the catalog record that will take you to Naxos Music Library. You must be on campus, or connected to the campus network through a virtual private network (you must be affiliated with the university to connect from off campus), to listen to Naxos Music Library.
Not every recording available through Naxos Music Library will be in the NIU Library catalog, but several thousand of them are. Please search Naxos Music Library directly for complete access to its content.
If you have any questions on using Naxos Music Library, please contact me at mduffyiv@niu.edu or via telephone at 753-9839.

Naxos Music Library is Live!
Our subscription to Naxos Music Library is now active! Thank you to all who submitted feedback during our recent trial of the service. You can access Naxos Music Library from the Music Subject Page. You must be connected to the campus network in order to access this page or to connect to Naxos Music Library.
In the future, I hope to be able to purchase and import catalog records for each of the albums on Naxos Music Library that have been cataloged.
The catalog record for the service itself can be found here.
Our subscription allows for only five simultaneous listeners, so I ask that you use the service judiciously, keeping in mind that it is for the entire NIU community.
