New Hess Catalog of Beethoven's Works

The Music Library recently acquired James F. Green's new translation of Willy Hess's catalogue of Ludwig van Beethoven's works. It is entitled, The New Hess Catalog of Beethoven's Works<, (West Newbury, VT: Vance Brook, 2003) and can be found in the Music Library Reference Collection under call no. MUR M134.B4 G74 2003.

This catalogue differs from the more widely known thematic catalogue of Kinsky and Halm, because Hess's catalogue does not include the published works from the collected editions of Beethoven's works with opus numbers. Instead, Hess focused his efforts on fragments, earlier versions, and other lesser-known examples of Beethoven's works. The Kinsky thematic catalogue can be used with the Hess catalogue to obtain a more complete picture of Beethoven's output.
